Applying for a place in the School Nursery

Nursery school admission

PLEASE NOTE THAT WITH EFFECT FROM 6 OCTOBER 2025 the online nursery portal will no longer be in operation.

Parents/Carers should contact the school or access the school website which the nursery unit is attached to, in order to apply for a nursery place.  Schools will be responsible for administering and allocating nursery places for their nursery unit.

Maintained nursery units/schools

A maintained nursery is managed by a governing body and is usually on the site of a primary school.

If you wish to apply for a Private, Voluntary, or Independent Playgroup/Nursery, or a neighbouring local authority's nursery, you need to contact them directly.

Your child can access 15 hours' free nursery care each week for 38 weeks each year the term after their third birthday. In maintained nurseries these hours are normally divided up into morning or afternoon sessions on five days per week. The school will contact you with details of the session times for your child after a place has been allocated by the local authority.

Some primary schools offer two-year-olds places; please check with the school you are interested in.

30 hours' funded childcare

Some working parents are eligible for up to 30 hours of funded childcare/early education per week (for three to four-year-olds). You can check whether you are eligible for 30 hours' free childcare via the Childcare Choices website.

You should contact your preferred nursery to find out if they will be offering 30-hour places and whether there is any availability.

  • 1 September and 31 December, you can apply for January admission.
  • 1 January and 31 March, you can apply for April admission.
  • 1 April and 31 August, you can apply for September admission.

Deferred entry to primary school

Parents may request that their child's entry be deferred until later in the school year following their fourth birthday, providing they do not defer beyond the point at which they reach compulsory school age.

Children born in the summer term are not required to start school until a full year after the point at which they could first have been admitted - the point at which other children in their age range are beginning Year 1. In all cases, parents will be advised to discuss any request for deferred entry with the relevant primary school.

Admission of children outside their normal age group

As a general principle, the local authority believes that children should be educated within their chronological peer group. The National Curriculum enables schools to modify both the curriculum offered and the assessment procedures in order to meet individual needs. Inclusion, therefore, should be promoted through curriculum differentiation within the classroom, rather than by moving the child into another year group.

The School Admissions Code makes it clear that it is school admission authorities who are responsible for making the decision on which year group a child should be admitted to but they should make decisions on the basis of the circumstances of each case and in the best interests of the child concerned.
